Lunawa basin & the catchment area has been a very fertile, luxuriant environment system, blessed by Mother Nature decades ago. Lunawa lake was filled with turquoise blue water, decorated with various kinds of water lilies, lotus & other beautiful water plants, lake bunts were shaded with bamboo trees & other mangrove shady trees, filled with lustrous beauty of mother natives, birds singing, butterflies and bees, wild flowers blooming. In the evening the view of sun setting was just relaxing.

Unfortunately this whole system has turned upside down & now the situation is entirely the opposite and the pathetic side of the story is, folks who lived by the river banks, who’s livelihood happened to be fishing have lost their income due to Lunawa lake is biologically dead & environmentally degraded indiscriminate human activities (Industrial & Domestic pollution) taken place last three decades.
      

The LEI&CDP started as a result to seek solutions for these pathetic conditions, with collaboration of Dehiwala – Mt. Lavinia MCs, UN – Habitat, CRMP, NWS&DB this has become as afflictive effect.
